I feel this is MA Comley's best book to date. Just to give you an idea: I lost my reading mojo for well over a month and when I picked this book up, my mojo returned! I read it in one sitting.

What genre do you write and what genre do you prefer to read?

Melanie, thank you so much for hosting me. I love talking to fellow mystery authors; I always learn something new.

I write romantic thrillers and the Detective Emilia Cruz police procedural series. When I’m not writing, I love reading mysteries. I think it started way back when, with Robert B. Parker’s Spenser series, but lately I’m drawn to series in more exotic places including Michael Stanley’s Inspector Kubu series in Botswana and Colin Cotterill’s Dr. Siri Paiboun series set in Laos. But I’ll drop everything for a new Jo Nesbo; in addition to great writing, Oslo is one of my favorite cities.

During your childhood who was your biggest influence?

I’m lucky enough to have grown up in New York living next to my maternal grandparents. My grandmother was the family matriarch and I loved spending time at her house. I have great memories of watching The A Team and Riptide with her. No doubt, this is what launched my love of the mystery and action//adventure genres.

Are you fortunate enough to write full-time?

Yes, I’m a full time writer. I thought that when that happened, I’d glide through life in a sparkling home, wearing dresses and pearls, having oodles of time to get my nails done and taking a yoga class every day.

Instead, the house is as cluttered as it ever was, the dog complains that he doesn’t get enough attention (an endless task), and I’m wearing jeans while yelling at my computer screen. I’ve become addicted to sticky notes, plotting how to kill hapless characters, and Starbucks’ Italiano blend.

I usually take an afternoon break at 3:00 pm when my local television station airs an episode of the BBC classic  As Time Goes By. The series is on an endless loop; as soon as Judy and Alistair get married we go back to episode 1. I can quote swaths of dialogue.

If Hollywood came knocking who would you want to play your main character?

Hollywood did come knocking, much to my mingled trepidation and excitement. Last year a major US network bought the option to produce a television series based on the Detective Emilia Cruz mystery series.

Emilia is the first female police detective in Acapulco, taking on Mexico’s drug cartels and culture of machismo, which also trying to have a personal life that includes Kurt Rucker, an American hotel manager.

I don’t know who might play the main character, but a strong Latina like Jennifer Lopez, Michelle Rodriguez, or America Ferrera could carry it off. Kurt is a tall, blonde, former US Marine, and triathlete. Any actors to suggest?

What one piece of advice have you found the most important in your writing career?

Ahhh, the infamous piece of advice every newbie author dreams will pave the writing road to success. Here’s how mine went:

FAMOUS AMERICAN AUTHOR: “But the novel is set in Mexico. All the characters are Mexican.”

ME: “That’s right. Lives of the people fighting the drug cartels. And Mexico’s class structure.”

FAMOUS AMERICAN AUTHOR: “New York will never touch it And a New York agent is the only kind worth having. New York agents are looking for the next Sex and the City. Glossy. High heels. New York.”

ME: “This is a romantic political thriller. Makes the real Mexico accessible to the American audience the way Martin Cruz Smith’s Arkady Renko series did for Russia.”

FAMOUS AMERICAN AUTHOR: *sniff* “New York won’t buy a book with all Mexican characters. And your main character is a maid. At least couldn’t you make her American? You know, a college girl from Pittsburgh named Susan or Tess who goes to Mexico on a cultural exchange program to work as a maid for a semester.”

This was about 5 years ago and the conversation was about potential agents for my first novel, the romantic thriller THE HIDDEN LIGHT OF MEXICO CITY.

I could have tossed off a barbed remark about how it would cost an American in Pittsburgh more to get to Mexico than they would earn as a maid in three months, but I was too busy being appalled.

This was a book about Mexico’s drug war, the people fighting it, and their chances of survival. It was also a Cinderella story taking on Mexico’s unspoken caste system. Sue and Tess were not part of that narrative.

I decided to ignore the FAMOUS AMERICAN AUTHOR. I published without an agent, and in the long run have found it much more important to know a good intellectual property rights attorney!

What are your plans for the coming year?

For starters, I’m leaving the house clutter where it is. My family doesn’t care and the dog hasn’t done anything constructive since we got him.

With PACIFIC REAPER, the fifth book in the Detective Emilia Cruz series just out, I’m already outlining 43 MISSING, which will be next in the series. Three Emilia Cruz short stories are also in the works, all of which take place before the events in CLIFF DIVER, the first novel.

The audiobooks of the first 4 novels in the series will be released by Tantor Media in 2017. Johanna Parker, who was the voice talent for the Sookie Stackhouse series, will narrate.

I’m also editing the forthcoming nonfiction INSIDER’S GUIDE TO THE BEST OF MEXICO and working on a fun memoir of my college days in Paris entitled GIRL MEETS PARIS.

Plus, I have the Mystery Ahead newsletter to keep me busy every month. Readership has been growing like crazy and I’m really committed to putting out a quality product. Every edition has something for both mystery readers and writers: writing protips, books reviews, author interviews, etc.

It's no secret that I am a big fan of this author. I read her first book, Cruel Justice, back in 2011 and have followed her ever since through that and other crime series. This book is the third instalment in the Intention Series and although the main story is self contained in this book, two of the great things about this author are her characterisation and character development and so to get the very best out of all her books, it is best to always start from book one in each series and read in order.
So, Louise Gillespie wakes up after being in a nasty car accident. Problem is, her version of what happened before the crash differs greatly from what the police are telling her. She believes she was with her husband Matthew and daughter Sophie, en route to a holiday in Cornwall. The police are adamant she was alone in the car. She starts frantically trying to find her family but the police are doing nothing to help her and write off her memories as false, coming from the head injury she suffered in the crash. But Louise knows she's right and, checking out of the hospital, she goes off to try and find out what is happening. Failing at every turn, she is completely distraught but, as her handbag is missing from the crash, she has nothing or no one to help her. Luckily, she bumps into Ellie and Brian, two retired cops turned PIs who are on holiday. Can Ellie and Brian get to the truth of what happened to Louise. Is she right about her version of events, or is she just delusional? And if she is right, what on earth is going on, and more importantly why?
Oooh this book was deliciously fast paced and action packed. It was also very well plotted. There were some times when I was reading that I thought, no, that's contradictory, that doesn't make sense, but I went with it cos I know this author and what she does, She tests her readers - not sure if it's by design or accident, but I know of old that this is the way it is and, to my delight, I was right, all was explained a few pages later.
The book hits the ground running pretty much from page one and the action doesn't stop right until the end. There is no padding, there are no wasted words. Pacing is excellent, there are some slightly calmer moments every so often through the book, which I am thankful for as I do need a bit of respite every so often.
As already mentioned, this author writes brilliant characters. They are always well fleshed out and real, very real. But, not only are they great characters, they have some great interactions. This author writes the best banter I have read, and I read a lot!
The storyline is original. I am amazed after so many books that this author still has the power to deliver something completely new. But she does, and I have never managed to work it all out early in any of her books. There's always something I didn't see coming. Maybe she could branch into magic, she's definitely good at the art of distraction.
All in all, a cracking read that kept my attention from start to finish and left me completely satisfied. Just need to wait to see what she has in store for next time.

I started this book in the morning and didn't put it down until I finished it. I was totally absorbed in the very believable characters. I'm not one to go into detail. I'll leave that to the pro's. But just to say, one of the most gripping books in this genre, I've read for quite a while.

Although this is my first book in the Intention series, it worked perfectly well as a standalone book but I do now have to buy books one and two.
I loved the characters Ellie, Brian and Louise, they were so likeable and easy to believe.
Devious Intention is a fast paced story about Louise, who is involved in a car accident with her husband and 4 year old daughter. When Louise regains consciousness, her husband and daughter are missing and no-one seems to believe that she was not alone in the car and was in fact driving at the time. And so the investigation begins when Louise is fortunate enough to meet PI’s Ellie and Brian.
Although I have read and loved many of the brilliant Mel Comley’s previous books, I think this one is one of my favourites so far.
Never a dull moment and I am sure it is going to be a massive hit as usual.

I was asked to read Devious Intention by the author in return for an honest review. Although this is in fact the third in the 'Intention' series, it reads fine as a standalone, although I'm definitely going to seek out the first two in the series. This is the story of Louise Gillespie, who suffers a traumatic accident. Lost and alone in Cornwall, she meets Private Investigator's, Ellen and Brian Lynx, who help her to piece together the shocking truth of that day's events. I particularly loved this book because the characters were likeable and believable, as was the plot. It was short enough to read in one sitting, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would recommend this book to all crime and police procedural lovers. Thanks to the author for allowing me to read this ARC. 4.5 stars.

This is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The story starts with a car accident in which Louise receives a head trauma. When she gains consciousness there is no sign of her husband and daughter. The local police tell her that she was driving and was alone. She doesn't know who to turn to until a chance encounter with Ellie and Brian, two Private Investigators who are on holiday. They believe Louise and want to help her discover what happened.

This is a fast-paced book and kept me enthralled enough to read it in one sitting. I liked the characters of Ellie and Brian and their rapport. It is a definite 5* read.

When I was offered an ARC by the author of this book, I was over the moon as I just love her books and its like settling down to have a chat with an old friend when I read a new one. Devious Intentions is the third in the Intention series but can totally be read as a standalone novel. I hadn't read the first two before starting this, in fact I hadn't been aware of the series, but I will certainly keep an eye out for them now!

This one starts off with one of my worst nightmares as Matthew and Louise Gillespie set off for their holiday in the car with their daughter Sophie. Louise has just been though a terrible ordeal having suffered a miscarriage and is looking forward to a break away. But when their car is rammed off the road, Louise is knocked unconscious and when she wakes Matthew and Sophie aren't there. And this was where I got totally sucked into the plot! Where were Matthew and Sophie? What had happened to them and why was Louise in the driver's seat? Nobody seems to be interested in helping Louise to find her family, they all think she is delirious after her head injury. But that's where Ellen, Paul and Cally step in after bumping into Louise while they are on their honeymoon.

I took to the former police officers immediately, especially Ellen, as they came to the rescue with a pledge to help Louise find out what had happened to her family. The story twists and turns, never quite going in the direction I had expected. It was a perfect length to chill out with for a couple of hours relaxation, and an enjoyable couple of hours they were!

WOW....I've been left crying and to me that's one of the biggest compliments I can give to a book. When it grips you deep inside you that your that engrossed that your placed right in the middle of a amazing book and don't want it to end......I love the way Mel Comely writes its such a pleasure to read,yet again I'm left wanting more. I love that we have got a nice team forming and I dread to think what they are going to get up too next......I guess I'm going to have to wait....This is a great little series of Mel's but you can read then as a stand alone ( but I believe your missing out on some AMAZING BOOKS ) Thanks again Mel for giving us yet another awesome book !!!! 5*****

I was in a reading slump when I started to read this. Wow this cured me What an exciting tale that starts with a car crash and a missing husband and daughter. The subsequent investigation is an uncomfortable realisation that all is not as it seems. I could not put it down. My thanks to the author for a copy and for restoring my faith in thrillers.

I read this book as an ARC copy through THE Bookclub on Facebook, in exchange for an honest review.
Whilst on holiday in an English sea side town, ex police officers Ellen Brazil and Brian Lynx meet a confused young mother. She has just survived a car accident but is trying to find her husband and daughter. The local police are not much help, Ellen and Brian are now working as PI's and try to help Louise with her hunt. It is wonderful to welcome back Ellen and Brian both well rounded and likeable characters. A five star book for me.

This is one of my favorite of Comley's books and I was excited to see another was released. Comley has done it again. The way she keeps the reader looking in every direction, not knowing what to expect at the turn of a page, is her signature. This book is perfect for the Ellen Brazil and Brian Lynx PI series. These two are on the job to unwind a particularly devious plan. It was a fast read because the story flowed well and I got caught up in the mystery so quickly. If you're a thriller/mystery lover, you'll love this author and in particular this book. This can absolutely be read as a stand alone but you'll want to read all of them anyway, so begin at the start of the series.

Devious Intention is a fast paced thriller which grips you from the first page.
It begins when Louise has a car accident with her Husband and Daughter. She loses consciousness and when she wakes, finds out that her Husband and Daughter are missing and that she was in the driving seat even though she wasn't driving. The Police do not believe her and therefore do not offer much help but a chance meeting with PI's Ellie and Brian who are both on holiday leads them into believing her and helping her solve this mystery.

This is the third book in the Intention series but it can also be read as a stand alone. I really do not know how M A Comley does it, as each one surpasses the one before and this one certainly did not disappoint. I love the relationship between Ellie and Brian and in some parts I found myself holding my breath, which M A Comley's books do to me on many occasions. This is definitely another 5* from me.
